How to Utilize Solar Technology to Optimize Urban Public Lighting

Author:SUNFREE LIGHTING LIMITED Click: Time:2026-04-21 00:00:00

Urban public lighting is essential at night. But traditional streetlights connect to the power grid all year round. They have high electricity costs and require frequent maintenance. Many places have started using solar streetlights. The common design places a flat solar panel at an angle on top of the pole. This design has a clear weakness. The flat panel has a large wind-catching area. It can easily get damaged in strong winds. It also only efficiently captures direct sunlight from one direction. If the direction or angle is not ideal, power generation drops. The design also looks out of place. It rarely blends well with the surrounding streetscape. To truly optimize public lighting with solar technology, we need a new approach. An innovative vertical solar tube lighting solution offers valuable insights.

This vertical power module consists of 4 to 16 high-efficiency solar panels. They are arranged vertically like a column. Every surface of the tube can absorb light energy. High-performance monocrystalline cells are sealed inside. This creates a 360-degree light-receiving surface. No matter where the sun is—rising in the east, high at noon, or setting in the west—the tube wall can always capture the light. It converts that light into electricity. Compared to flat panels that only rely on direct sunlight from one side, the vertical structure has almost no requirements for direction or angle. It can also stably collect energy on cloudy days or when there is strong scattered light. Its total daily power generation is significantly better.

With this tubular design, wind resistance changes from a weakness to a strength. The cylindrical shape naturally has low wind resistance. It also uses 3.2-millimeter ultra-clear tempered glass and an integrated steel structure. This makes it very stable even in windy areas or coastal cities. In terms of appearance, the power tube itself serves as the main lamp pole. It has clean, simple lines. From a distance, it does not look like an added power generation device. It looks more like a carefully designed streetlight. This allows solar lighting to naturally blend into various scenes. These include commercial streets, parks, and squares. It does not damage the landscape during the day. And it provides zero-carbon lighting at night.

This system also simplifies the installation and maintenance process. Traditional solar streetlights require complex on-site assembly and wiring. But with this system, the solar panels, batteries, controller, and LED lights are pre-assembled as a single unit at the factory. They can be installed almost immediately upon arrival at the site. There is no need for large-scale road breaking to bury cables. It also reduces the time for lifting and debugging. This greatly saves labor and engineering costs. For roads that have been built for many years and want to replace energy-saving lamps, we can directly use vertical solar modules for renovation. There is no need to re-lay pipelines. And it can operate off-grid without power interruption. The long-term electricity cost savings are very significant.

If we summarize all these advantages, they are as follows:

First, wind-resistant and safe. The tubular structure has extremely low wind resistance. Combined with tempered glass and steel frame, it remains reliable in bad weather.

Second, 360-degree all-round sunlight capture. It is not limited by direction or angle. It uses sunlight more fully throughout the day. And its power generation is more stable.

Third, easy and hassle-free installation. It is pre-assembled as a single unit. There are fewer on-site procedures. This shortens the construction period and reduces labor costs.

Fourth, long lifespan and low maintenance. It uses Topcon or BC high-efficiency batteries. Its designed lifespan can reach 20 years. It almost never requires special cleaning or maintenance.

Fifth, small footprint. The column shape has very low space requirements. It can be flexibly arranged even on narrow sidewalks or in green belts.

Sixth, integration with urban landscape. It eliminates the rigid look of traditional photovoltaics. It makes renewable energy devices part of the streetscape.

With such reliable photovoltaic hardware, we can take urban public lighting optimization one step further. If we add light sensors and timing controls, the lights can automatically dim in the late night when there are few people. This achieves a second level of energy saving. In the longer term, each vertical solar light can become a sensing node in a smart city. It can perform some environmental monitoring or adaptive lighting functions. But this does not change its core task. Its core task is to light up the city safely at night. It does this in a stable, economical, and aesthetically pleasing way.

Of course, solar lighting always needs to be based on a reasonable assessment of local sunlight conditions. We need to configure the appropriate battery capacity. But this does not prevent vertical solar tube technology from being a smarter solution for public lighting. When streetlights are no longer just devices that consume electricity, but become energy trees that silently collect sunlight in the city, we take another step towards a lower-carbon and more livable city.
